Thinking Big - Changing the World More Effectively

Changing the globe is no tiny job. Each day, several persons engage in "globe-altering" activities such as performing community service or preaching an inspirational message to a church -- the small issues. These things can have an immediate and effective positive effect on those nearby. Regrettably, "nearby" is the key word in that sentence. As significantly effort as you may possibly put into organizing a community cleanup day or serving at a soup kitchen, and as helpful as those projects could be to your location, they do small to assist the oppressed citizens of China or the starving youngsters of Africa.

Any really world-altering movement would need some level of service to nearby communities -- you cannot do every thing from Washington, D.C., as some say. On the other hand, you surely can't do every thing from the comfort of your own house, either. In brief, the philanthropic activities in which we most frequently engage are needed but not sufficient to attain the goals to which we aspire.

Thinking big requires alot more than just an expansion of our present thoughts into new real estate. We cannot use the similar strategies to impact one million lives that we use to affect one life. Let's say, for example, that we're strolling by means of an African desert on a camel (call it a low-budget safari). We come across a starving homeless man who begs us for one thing to eat. There is no sign of civilization anywhere (we determine not to ask how he got here in the initially spot). The first answer which comes to mind is almost certainly to give him some food and wish him nicely, perfect? But upon further consideration, we comprehend that we do not have sufficient food to preserve him alive indefinitely, and it is fairly unlikely that any other low-spending budget safari adventurers will be traveling this way anytime soon. We have no choice but to take him back to our camp and point him in the direction of the nearest town.

Searching at the genuine globe, we see a comparable scenario for millions of Africans as properly as many people on other continents. Logically, if we extend our answer to the 1 starving man, we come to the conclusion that we should migrate every single starving loved ones to a various component of the planet. It doesn't take significantly thought to point out the causes why that would go terribly wrong.

Our present remedy to the significant-scale case appears to be to throw food and cash in their common direction and pat ourselves on the back for becoming altruistic. (Disclaimer: This is a quite simplistic and only partially-realistic example. I have no notion how huge the actual "feed the globe" efforts are nor what procedures are being undertaken.) This does not work for the very same reason why we wouldn't have given our homeless man food and left him alone -- we can't give enough for an indefinite period of sustainability. Our starving beneficiaries will turn out to be dependent on our aid whilst we work doubly hard to create enough food to feed them as well as ourselves.

As type as that is for us to indefinitely give for the rest of the world, it's not exactly efficient. The finest solution for long-term sustainability of any system is for that system to sustain itself with no reliance on outside effects. In other words, we need to teach these impoverished nations to fend for themselves.

In the case of our starving kids in Africa, it might be difficult to teach desert agriculture if we ourselves do not know anything about it. To solve this issue, we could invest additional cash into the analysis of arid-zone agriculture, and provide a solution to Africans once we've discovered some thing feasible. Hey, that's uncomplicated sufficient, proper? Just funnel millions of dollars into R&D, wait a couple of months, and watch the answer hatch!

Unfortunately, as we all know, it's not nearly that trivial -- hence supplying us with a further "chance" to think outside of the box. To feed Africa, we will need study. To do research, we need to have cash. To get cash, we have to have a miracle- I mean, uhh... aid from the government. To get aid from the government, we need to convince some really stubborn men and women that our trigger is worthwhile. And to do that requires a bit of charisma, a bit of word-twisting, and a lot of luck. Of course, any step in this process could be circumvented by a sufficiently altruistic person (e.g. the researchers could function for absolutely free), but then we'd nonetheless have to be concerned about convincing a person to personally invest in that manner. Who'd have thought that feeding a starving man could be so complex?:)

Regardless of the specifics, any globe-altering movement calls for a fundamental shift of thought if it is to succeed. We can't scale the solutions for a smaller region to the entire planet, just as we cannot feed 1 million individuals in the exact same way that we can feed one.

Until next time... think big!
